Work has started on another major project at The Knap area in Barry. The refurbishment of the gardens shelter nearest the skateboard facility will involve cleaning the structure, making it watertight and providing new balustrades.
The work will be undertaken for the Vale of Glamorgan Council by Cardiff-based Beton Bauen Limited, and is scheduled to take 16 weeks.
Cabinet member for visible services Councillor Rob Curtis said:
“This project will restore the shelter for public use and funding has been provided through an agreement with the developers of the Water's Edge development. It shows this council's commitment to improving the gardens for the benefit of visitors and the local community.”
The contractor's site office will be on The Promenade and a set of steps adjacent to the shelter will be closed to the public during the works. Full access to the lakeside path will be maintained.
During the last year, the council has undertaken drainage repair works in the vicinity of the new landscaped area leading to Watchtower Bay and is currently cleaning the lake. The skateboard park has been refurbished in a project funded by the Richard Taylor Memorial Fund and the council.
Councillor Curtis added: "The council is delighted that, in the past year, it has been able to make a great deal of headway on a significant and long overdue programme of improvement works for the area. We are determined to work with local residents to ensure that the Knap Gardens are returned to their former glory".
