Miller Construction has started work on a landmark £30 million mixed-use development which is set to transform the Bristol skyline, and forms part of a major regeneration project in the city.

Miller Construction was awarded the contract by Rex Developments for the construction of Broad Quay, an 18 story glass tower and eight story residential development in the heart of Bristol. The residential blocks will be constructed on either side of the tower.

The development, which lies adjacent to Bristol Quay, will create 250,000 sq ft of prime hotel and residential space. It will comprise a 176 bedroom hotel, 130 private residential apartments, 30 affordable residential apartments and four retail units, and will be based around an existing local structure – the former Bristol and West Building Society. The old building forms the core of the new structure which is being built using a variety of specialist glazing systems to create an iconic glass tower. Use of various colours of glass, each with different reflective qualities, will give the tower the appearance of ‘disappearing’ into the sky.

The site is one of strong historical significance. City Council archaeologists discovered that the old city wall runs along the Broad Quay boundary and there are also medieval walls on-site. In addition, there is evidence of an old slipway running from the medieval walls through the city wall into the Broad Quay site, which was once a harbour. In order to preserve the area’s history, the medieval walls will be incorporated into the design, and will be on show on the first floor terrace and in one of the retail units.

Beton Bauen Ltd have been awarded the structural repair package to the existing Bristol and West tower. Works include extensive concrete repairs following the demolition works to the concrete frame. Alterations within the existing lift shafts require our repair teams to work off suspended cradles within the lift shafts to gain access to the repair zones. Further work packages have been awarded to Beton Bauen Ltd by Miller Construction including concrete coring for M&E services and additional builders works.
